How can I find donors for my foundation
Follow the tips in the video - start with those around you, ask them to invite their friends to give, then think about who makes an ideal donor and invite them to give.
This is NOTHING NEW... I've been hearing this for more than a decade, EVERYWHERE. Someone in the field should've known this, at least from own trial and error. Also, to clarify: THESE WORDS ARE *NOT* A GUARANTEE TO GET THE DONATION OUT OF A DONOR. There is SO, SO MUCH MORE INTO IT!
There's definitely more to getting donations, this is just a simple and quick video to get newer nonprofits thinking..

If you are at the complete beginning of starting a nonprofit tax-exempt 501c3, wanting to save abused and neglected animals, but don't really have the best place to keep any. Can you just keep fundraising for 6 months to a year or till you get enough donations to really get started comfortably or do you have to start using the donations right as they come in? Can you use the donations to buy property first to then set up a place to start taking the rescued animals? I hope that makes sense. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Most people want to see their donations used, but unless it’s a grant, there’s no set rule on how quickly you have to use a donation. It’s just best practice to use it within the years time. However, you can use donations for property & setting up a place AS LONG AS YOU ARE FULLY TRANSPARENT about using the money for those things. I would have an online fundraising campaign or event that pretty much gives the message or says, “now we have our 501c3 but that’s just the start of our great work. If we want to help abused & neglected animals we need a safe, clean, and efficient space to bring them to. That’s where you come in…”. That way the donor knows what you’re doing with the money and you can use the funds right away to fund that project. 😊

I cringed at the “thank your volunteers and then ask them for a donation”. It’s like your university sending you a congratulatory letter for graduation and at the end asking for a donation...after spending $60,000 on tuition and books and being completely in debt.
Thanks for your feedback on that tip. Because the purpose of the email is to ask for a donation, it's ok to do it this way. To your point, you certainly don't want to ask a volunteer for a donation if the email you're sending to them is intended as a thank-you. 😊

Sandy, I have a question. My colleague oversees a non-profit sports/educational non-profit organization, which currently doesn't have any funding, but if an individual decided to pay an entry fee on our behalf for a particular event that charges a fee to participate in their tournament, I am assuming it will be a donation for the person but what should we do to record it and also to provide him proof of his donation. Does he get an invoice from the organization he paid it to, and do we issue him a receipt for paying such fee on our behalf as a donation for tax purposes?
That would be considered an in kind donation. They'd issue a receipt for the the registration fee and the donor is responsible for adding the amount.
